You don't hav to be a professional cyclist to be able to got for a Sunday ride or a few days' cycling holday all you need is the right spirit and a taste for some physical exercise.

Cycling is an alternative way of travelling and exploring. It is a way of getting to know the local area, of becoming familiar with your surroundings and of course, seeing famous places. Above all, the green hillside, the quaint villages, quiet roads and everchanging scenery will all contribute to making your bike rides even more enjoyable. Choose the right, short and non-energetic, itineraries and you are well on your way to an enjoyable day or few days.

About half the route around Lake Trasimeno is a walking/cycling track. It runs along the lakeshore for part of the way and then travels through interesting natural scenery between Castiglione del Lago and Sant'Archangelo. This short route is perfect for all cyclists not matter how fit they are. You will need a hybrid, trekking or mountain bike for this route.

Castiglione del Lago is your starting point - a beautiful town with an historical centre surrounded by medieval walls and stunning views over Lake Trasimeno.

The route starts along the lakeshore cycle path, after passing through a natural reserve your route changes to sealed road at Borghetto (8.9km) and then back to cycle path. It then runs close to the lake through a thick wood that is cool even in the summer heat. Past the wood and the track follows the railway line to Lido di Tuoro (14.7km) where food and water is available.

Touro is famous for the "Battle of Lake Trasimeno" historical route, which reconstructs the battle between the Romans and the Carthaginians where the Romans were beaten by Hannibal's army.

Soon you will reach the attractive little town of Passignano.

Passignano sul Trasimeno has preserved many of its characteristics of an ancient fortified village protected by walls and a fortres, there are many churches of interest and you could even take a boat trip out to visit Maggiore and Polvese islands.

You will continue your ride along the shores of the lake and keep going until you reach Darsena where the track starts again. (21.8km) At any point on these itineries you can turn around to retrace your steps. Therefore after have stopped for a nice lunch at Tuoro or Passignano, you can then reurn back to base, the choice is yours.

The whole area of Lake Trasimeno is of great interest as it is 126 km2 making it Italy's 4th largest lake which is also a protected Regional Park.
